This “whatsit” was a tough one, but we had a few correct answers!
This “whatsit” stumped most of you… but not all! From The Fort Smith Museum of History this item is a “Vintage Weaver Rayoscope” from 1939. This nifty tool was used to align headlights on cars! I bet my dad would have loved checking this out!
Wanda was the first correct answer, and she’ll get a complimentary paid subscription to this Substack.
“My CCC Boyfriend” from the journal of Doris Bean Hardin…
This is an excerpt from one of the journals my paternal grandmother left me, and I thought you all would just love this little personal bit from the 1930s:
It was back in 1933. I was 15. I went to a dance and wore a lavender dress with a royal ruffle skirt. My hair was set in curls short around my face. A friend of mine whose name was Vance Cartee introduced me to a real good-looking boy. His name was Lamar Browning. He was well built, wore a grey suit and blue tie to match his eyes. He was blond with naturally wavy hair. He wanted my address and I gave it to him. He wrote me three letters. I had told him at the dance that my daddy would not let me go with CCC* boys. He said to please forgive him for being one. He said he has fallen in love with me because I was a nice girl and didn’t let him kiss me. My sister slipped and read the letter. She told three of my cousins and when he came adn took me to a dance these cousins would grab me and kiss me and I thought they had lost their minds. I was crying and he left! He never got the chance to kiss me. I never saw or heard from him again. My Henry lived with these cousins and knew all about this dirty trick. My grandma said its better to love and loose than to never loved at all. If you can’t get the one you want, take what you can get.
*CCC stood for Civilian Conservation Corps, which was a Franklin Roosevelt New Deal project to offer relief during the Depression. I have no idea why MawMaw’s Daddy was set against her dating one of those boys, but she was a wily one, as anyone can see from this picture of her around that time!

Note from C.H.
I LOVE to write. It has been my passion since I was just thirteen years old. And I’d love to be able to write more; but for now, I still work full-time out in the real world (wouldn’t it be super snazzy to live even part of the year in a dream world?)
If I’m going to write more, I need sustainable income outside of the regular workplace. That’s why I’m changing some things and asking for your help.
