Here in the United States you might be celebrating Memorial Day this weekend. How about a little Sessums’ History Snippet before I introduce today’s program? Memorial Day can trace its roots to the aftermath of the American Civil War, when both sides sought ways to honor the fallen and to bridge division by decorating the graves of those who died in that terrible conflict. The Columbus, Georgia Ladies Memorial Association planned an event in 1866 and their Secretary, Mary Ann Williams wrote that their effort was "to set apart a certain day to be observed...and be handed down through time as a religious custom of the country, to wreathe the graves of our martyred dead with flowers." Today I have a presentation of “A Farewell to Arms” presented by Lux Radio on April 5, 1937 starring Clark Gable and Adolph Menjou.
