I’ve got about a forty to forty-five-minute commute each day. It’s a lovely drive through “the country” whereas when I lived in Houston I spent about the same amount of time, instead in bumper-to-bumper traffic. I’ll take East Texas any day of the week…
My drive is good for many things. I sometimes listen to authors converse about “hot topics” on an app called Clubhouse... I sometimes Marco my bestie as we plot “world domination” through our writing... I often listen to audiobooks… Many times I “bang out” to music (all genres, all decades)… and sometimes I get an idea…
In one of those author conversations someone mentioned how their critique partner helps them take out the parts of a book that aren’t important to the story. The “boring” parts. And that made me think about one of our favorite classic radio shows, Dragnet. If you’ve ever listened, there is a LOT of extra stuff that isn’t important to the case. And I love ADORE that stuff. Like when Friday is under the weather and Smith convinces him that all he needs is to take some sodium pills. Or when Friday’s mother laments the fact that he hasn’t gotten home in time for dinner when she’s trying to fix him up with a nice girl
Layers… those little layers of “life” can give just the little extra I love!
So occasionally, I’m going to give you an extra “layer” here to read. A little something that may, or may not, ever end up in a book. But just might be a fun something you’ll enjoy.
A Friend of a friend… Bonus Vangie Guillory Layer
I was just in the process of offering my favorite pig a treat when I heard the bell ring above the door. I raised my eyes momentarily to glance at the newcomer, but not recognizing him I drew my attention back to Elroy.
When he began to munch on the snack in the palm of my hand I crooned to him. “Good boy.. You like that don’t you?” I scratched him behind the ears and if a pig could purr I figured he would have been as loud as a diesel engine.
“You're getting a little chummy with that pig now aren’t you, Vangie?”
