It was a chilly start here today in East Texas. Our big girl, the lab mix Heidi Ho, always wants to run the fence line in our backyard first thing when we get up. Today was no different, except that when she came back in, she was c-c-c-cold! She laid down on her bed and started shivering. My husband got up and went to the hall closet to retrieve our Cowboy blanket. By Cowboy blanket, I mean, the Dallas Cowboys. It’s a big blue and gray blanket with yard lines numbered on the face and that big Dallas Cowboys star in the center. He wrapped it around our big girl and gave her a little pet, then sat down to finish drinking his coffee, mentioning how he never was that much of a fan of the Cowboys, but that that blanket had certainly come in handy.
It brought forth a memory… a memory I hadn't recalled in a long time.
Most Sundays when I was a little girl, my mom and sisters and I got up, dressed for church, and went to grandma and grandfather's house. Grandfather would have gone to the local Southern Maid Donut Shop to order a dozen donuts for us to enjoy.
We would gobble down a few of those melt-in-your-mouth treats and then head off to church with Grandma and Aunt Debbie. After church, we would meet back at Grandma and Grandfather's house for lunch. Usually, we would call in an order at Sonic: cheese coneys and Frito pies! Mom, the girls and I would go pick up the order, me and my sisters holding all of those containers with foot-long cheese coneys and pies carefully in our laps
After our lunch, we would all sit around the living room to watch the Dallas Cowboys play football. Grandma was a HUGE Dallas Cowboys fan. In her sewing room, she had a big poster of Roger Staubach. Even before I understood football, I knew Roger Staubach. I knew Tom Landry and that iconic hat. And I knew that white t-shirt that grandma wore with the great big Dallas Cowboy star on the front.
I can see it all so clearly.
I can smell those cheese coneys…
I can hear the talking and the laughter…
I can remember the shouting at bad calls and the roar of excitement at touchdowns…
Those were the days. my friend…
We thought they’d never end…
But then, they always do, don’t they?
Our February “whatsit”
There were a LOT of good guesses about the “whatsit” but the correct answer was an angel cake or sponge cake cutter!
Sometimes my learning curve is a little slower than normal and I forgot in addition to changing the “caption” for the image, I also had to change the “alt-text” so some of you saw the answer to the “whatsit” when you hovered!
Our friend Jean was the first correct answer. If that’s YOU, I’m sending you a one-month paid subscription to my Substack!
In the stream
Speaking of football… my favorite stream this past week had to go with that and Texas!
My All-American
This true story about Texas Longhorn football player Freddie Steinmark was inspirational, emotional and oh-so-good! It also featured Aaron Eckhart in the part of Freddie’s coach. We give it ☆☆☆☆☆ (Available on Netflix)
If you streamed something great, please reply or comment to share. I love finding new movies and shows!

If I’m going to write more, I need sustainable income outside of the regular workplace. That’s why I’m changing some things and asking for your help.
